Sravasti Datta discusses how live music has become a prominent feature of the arts scene in Bengaluru. Carlton Braganza is noted as a key figure in this movement, being involved in various roles such as artist, restaurateur, designer, writer, curator, and entertainer. He has been innovative in engaging audiences, including launching the online music session Jukebox Jammies during the lockdown. In an interview with Bangalore Times, Carlton shares his perspectives on the changing music landscape in the city and areas that require improvement. He notes the thriving online content but highlights the lack of sufficient venues and audience for live music. Carlton attributes this shift to the focus on revenue, with live music not being as profitable and newer audiences gravitating towards more mainstream and commercial music. He emphasizes the importance of cultivating an audience open to diverse music genres to foster a vibrant music scene.Music spaces like Opus, The Humming Tree, and BFlat lack a distinct identity, according to Carlton. He notes a decline in band culture, attributing it to short band durations. Carlton acknowledges K-pop's popularity but laments the lack of new emerging bands. He advocates for exploring new music styles and venues, such as street performances and unconventional locations like old churches and local parks.
Regarding the use of AI in music, Carlton views it as a gimmick that can enhance creativity, even though it may benefit mediocre musicians. He emphasizes the importance of embracing change in mindsets and venues for musical performances.
Moreover, Carlton spearheaded the renowned Opus KroaKnights, which has been revamped into the singing contest KroaKING at the Kempegowda International Airport. He reminisces about the great talent that emerged from KroaKnights and envisions the event as a potential annual or biennial gathering that brings back memories of old Bengaluru. This event is special because it reconnects us with the old charm of Bengaluru. Many past winners and finalists who participated in previous events have now been in the industry for over a decade. They have been brought back as judges and mentors," he explains.
Speaking about the upcoming Coldplay concert, Carlton shares, “I saw them perform at the Stade de France. Their show is amazing, but their music appeals to a wide audience. Personally, I'm not particularly fond of their music.”
